Artist's Statement
As a narrative painter who works with the figure, I am interested in exploring the human condition and spiritual empowerment. Curiosity about the unchanging spiritual quality of an individual inspires surreal environments and an expression of strength, vulnerability and contemplation. Working with live figures and photographs allows freedom to communicate these qualities through body gesture and eye contact.
My oil paintings utilize a subtle complimentary color scheme in relation to color psychology and color therapy. Working on larger canvases allows more ambition in detailing in the figures and subtle shifts in light. I layer opaque paint with glazing to build up complex detail in a harmonizing manner. I see this as a metaphor to a person’s life experiences building his or her sense of self.
Awareness to social psychology and international current events inspires me to choose subjects who can act as a messenger of awareness. Illustrating a personal narrative permits a sense of voice for the subject in context of the predicament. A solution is not presented, nor is there immediate action. Only an acknowledgement that the moment is present and that there’s a sense of moving forward.
