Waldorf Courses
Rudolf Steiner founded the Waldorf movement in the early 18th century based on the perspective of anthroposophy, a philosophy used in education, agriculture, and medicine that develops the body, mind, and soul of a person by combining the fundamentals of science and spirituality. According to Steiner, the three fundamentals of Waldorf education are:
1. The human being (whether child or adult) is not only a physical being, but also a being of soul and spirit relating to soul and spirit realities.
2. In growing up, the child recapitulates the development of consciousness of humanity and education needs to be tailored and moderated in such a way that it is truly age appropriate, meaning, it relates to the developing consciousness of the child out of insights into the reality of the development of consciousness of humanity.
3. The Waldorf (or Steiner) Educator needs to be on a conscious path of self development, being at the same time a seeker of spiritual truth and a practitioner of a therapeutic and artistic teaching approach.
The Sophia Institute's Waldorf Teacher Training Program requires taking foundations in anthroposophy and standard K-12 education under the Waldorf philosophy. These foundations classes also prepares students to teach reading, math, and science at both the primary and secondary level. Twelve art classes are also required to complete the program. These classes include drawing, painting, pottery, fibers, vocal performance, and storytelling.
